• mackinac island is wonderful, albeit a bit touristy. but you can find plenty of cottages to rent & spend your time wandering the island without having to deal with all the tourist trap hotels.
• houghton lake in the upper part of the lower peninsula is nice.
• alpena is a small town but has really nice beaches on thunder bay of lake huron.
• rogers city (northern lake huron) has nice places to see as well.
• manistee (on lake michigan) is nice. you have beach in one direction, national forest in the other. bring a canoe or kayak & head down manistee river or out on manistee lake.
• if you’re willing to head further south, then grand haven/benton harbor (also on lake michigan) have great beaches & are both very nice places to visit. Holland is between the two and has many wonderfully quirky shops & a nice beach too.
have fun! few people realize it but michigan has much to offer beyond just motown & henry ford museum.
Grand Haven has one of the best beaches in Michigan and the little town is magical. Look into Grand Haven and you wont be disappointed. Torch Lake was voted the third most beautiful lake in the world by National Geographic Magazine. A boater’s paradise.
