I have two close friends who are foreign service officers (in the Dominican Republic and Pakistan) ? I've emailed both of them, but sadly I think they're on their vacation/leaves right now! I go to the DR every winter and I find it to be very safe. If low cost is a major issue. Fly into SDQ and stay at hotel domincan bay. It is much cheaper than punta cana and has a fantastic beach. There are shows, bars, and a disco right on the grounds. Security guards insure your safety. If you want more adventure there are many bars and discos in town.(Boca Chica) If your are with girls only, I would stay on the resort after dark. The Dominican Republic has a lower crime rate than most american cities.
Hi there. The Dominican Republic is "the new Caribbean." The main tourist areas are Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. I’m not sure of the actual crime rate there but most people who stay in the all inclusive resorts normally don’t leave them. A few of my friends have went there and had a great time. There are several island choices that would be safer. You would definitely not want to leave the resort property. Rates are probably cheaper in the DR but they are trying to attract business. Try the British or US Virgin Islands. Even the Bahamas would be better.
Its not a party place. more of relaxing. Punta cana is probably the best in DR. If you want to party, i suggest mexico.
